Week 3- Theories and Photographer Inspiration

Henry Carroll

Henry Carroll a photography based author who provides photography tips and information, with some inspiration. The chapter that inspired and taught me the most was the chapter focused on facial expressions. Normally when taking portraits that include people, the models automatically smile as they where trained to when they were younger, this automatic facial expression is not how they actually feel as they are only posing for the picture, which then makes the photograph look soulless as it lacks the real emotions. If a photo is then taken with our real emotions, it would give meaning and stories in the future, as it would be a source of realism.

Henri Cartier- https://www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/samuel-beckett-writer-seen-through-magnum-archive-portraiture-mark-nixon-josef-koudelka-henri-cartier-bresson-bruce-davidson/

On December 22, 1989, the Nobel Prize-winning Irish novelist and playwright Samuel Beckett died. A man who shunned the limelight, his image became well known nonetheless, as did his often darkly pessimistic writings and plays that dwell on human nature, and life’s absurdities. (Magnum Photography)

I like this image as it portrays the models actual emotion, showing his real facial expressions. The filter on this photo is also interesting as it is black and white making the photograph seem serious.

Week 2- Theoretical Knowledge And Inspirational Photographers

What makes a Composition Pleasing?

Having a source of composition within a photograph pleases the viewers eyes as the photograph is arranged in an equal and calming manner, if composition wasn’t used within the photograph, it may portray a messy presentation that may dissatisfy the viewer.

Rene Burri – https://www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/in-the-studio-yves-klein-body-art-rene-burri-painting-studio/

In the Studio is a series dedicated to the photographic documentation of artists within their workspaces. Over more than seven decades Magnum’s member-photographers have captured images of the inner sanctums of many artists, often forging long-standing working or creative partnerships with them in the process. The images made in the studios of artists, in the company of their creatively imposing occupiers, reveal everything from insights on techniques and fabrication processes to illuminating clutter, reassuringly normal mess, and hints at the personal lives of individuals beyond their well-known artistic output. (Magnum Photos)

I chose this photo from Rene Burri, a photo of a girl standing on a table, placed in the middle of the scene. The photo used the rule of thirds, by putting the Girl in the middle of the photo. By using a plain and clear room as a background emphasises the girl, giving her more attention, and making her the center of attention within the photograph.

I chose this photo because it narrated a story, it also stood up as a statement to me. I also loved the techniques Burri used to create a story.

Week 1- Photographer Inspiration

Alex Webb – https://creative.magnumphotos.com/photographers/alex-webb/ I like this photographer because of his artistic eye catching photography, the lighting and angle techniques this photographer uses is highly impressive.

David Alan Harvey- https://creative.magnumphotos.com/photographers/david-alan-harvey/ This photographer’s work is very observant, Harvey’s photographs tell stories, that not many photographers can capture. The filter’s Harvey applies towards his photographs are very artistic and sets a scene for his viewers.

Olivia Aurthur- https://creative.magnumphotos.com/photographers/olivia-arthur/ Olivia’s Photographs, are taken as a statement, These photos are very inspirational for a viewer who has similar thoughts presented within Aurthurs photographs. The usage she uses with Black and White filters also sets a scene for the viewers, making them acknowledge the importance of the statement.

Week 1 Theoretical Knowledge

Why do we take photos? What is the purpose of photographs? A thought I’ve constantly asked my self. Personally I think we take photographs to capture the good moments, leaving us memories to think and remind us in the future. Looking at a secondary source, Ingledew’s Loading pages 7-12, reflect the same thought, stating the importance of recording the special moments in our lives.

How important is technique? What personal and cultural value do photographs have? Photography holds a lot of personal and cultural value. As mentioned before, photography is a type of source one can hold their memories, photography can also be an expressive way people could use to express and reflect their feelings, thoughts and ideas. Photography can also be used to hold traditions in many cultures, having people express and advertise their traditions and cultures.

Week 1

A photograph’s exposure determines how light or dark an image will appear when it’s been captured by a camera. This is determined by three camera settings: aperture, ISO and shutter speed (the “exposure triangle”).

A camera’s aperture setting controls the area over which light can pass through your camera lens. It is specified in terms of an f-stop value, which can at times be counterintuitive, because the area of the opening increases as the top decreases

Shutter speed is used to control motion. A faster shutter speed will stop motion, and the faster the subject is moving, the faster the shutter speed must be to accomplish this.

The ISO speed determines how sensitive the camera is to incoming light. Similar to shutter speed, it also correlates 1:1 with how much the exposure increases or decreases. However, unlike aperture and shutter speed, a lower ISO speed is almost always desirable, since higher ISO speeds dramatically increase image noise.
